The Problem with Synthetic Vitamins

Folic acid is cheap, shelf-stable, and found in nearly every multivitamin and fortified food. It's also synthetic — a form of folate that doesn't exist in nature and that your body cannot use directly.

Before folic acid can participate in any biological process, your body must convert it through a multi-step enzymatic pathway. The key enzyme in this chain is MTHFR (methylenetetrahydrofolate reductase). When this enzyme is impaired — even partially — unconverted folic acid accumulates, while the supply of active folate your body needs stays low.


What MTHFR Means for You

The MTHFR gene encodes the enzyme responsible for the final conversion step that produces active folate (5-MTHF). Variants in this gene — particularly C677T and A1298C — reduce the enzyme's efficiency by 30–70% depending on whether one or both copies are affected.

These variants are common. Researchers estimate that 40–60% of people carry at least one MTHFR variant. Most have no idea. The impact is subtle but cumulative: reduced methylation capacity, lower neurotransmitter synthesis, impaired DNA repair, and elevated homocysteine — a cardiovascular risk marker.


How 5-MTHF Is Different

5-MTHF (5-methyltetrahydrofolate) is the biologically active end-form of folate — the molecule your cells actually recognize and use. It doesn't require MTHFR conversion because it already is the converted form.

When you take 5-MTHF, it crosses into your bloodstream and is taken up by your cells directly. It donates methyl groups to key reactions: synthesizing SAM-e (your primary methyl donor), producing serotonin, dopamine, and norepinephrine, supporting homocysteine clearance, and enabling proper DNA methylation.


Why 15mg?

Most methylfolate supplements contain 400–800mcg. At 15mg, Vyla provides a therapeutic-range dose consistent with what's been studied in clinical contexts for mood, methylation, and cardiovascular support.
